UM2007 Photoblog now available

The UM2007 Organizing Committee has prepared a blog with photos from the days of conference. The photoblog is available through the Blogger platform from here. Visitors may comment on these photos or contribute, but because of policy limitations of the platform these actions require a Google account. Those who don't have a Google account and do not want to create one please contact Giannis Tsakonas (remove protection) for alternative means of access (please include subject title: UM2007 Photoblog).


Electronic subscription to UMUAI 2007 and 2008

We would like to inform those people who requested the electronic subscription to the UMUAI journal when they registered, that we have forwarded their email addresses to Springer in July and Springer should contact them with further instrunctions. If this has not happened yet, please inform George Paliouras (remove protection).

2006 James Chen Annual Award for Best Journal Article is Announced

The following announcement regards the 2006 James Chen Annual Award for Best Journal Article.

"User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction: The Journal of Personalization Research (UMUAI) is pleased to announce that the paper

A Model of Perceptual Task Effort for Bar Charts and its Role in Recognizing Intention by Stephanie Elzer, Nancy Green, Sandra Carberry and James Hoffman in Volume 16, Number 1 / March, 2006

has been elected as the winner of the 2006 James Chen Annual Award for Best Journal Article. It was selected based on nominations from journal reviewers, editorial board members, and a subsequent comparative review by an award committee chaired by Judy Kay from the University of Sydney, Australia.

The UMUAI annual best paper award has been donated by the Chen family in commemoration of James R. Chen, a creative researcher in the area of user modeling and information retrieval, and twice a UMUAI author. It carries a cash prize of U.S. $1,000.

UMUAI provides an interdisciplinary forum for the dissemination of new research results on interactive computer systems that can be adapted or adapt themselves to their current users, and on the role of user models in the adaptation process. More specific the Fifth International Workshop on Authoring of Adaptive and Adaptable Hypermedia has extended its deadline to February 27, the Personalisation in E-Learning Environments at Individual and Group Level workshop to February 18 and the Towards User Modelling and Adaptive Systems for All workshop February 25. James Chen Best Student Paper Awards Information

User Modeling Inc. is pleased to announce that two 2006 James Chen Best Student Paper Awards went to the following students who presented their papers at Adaptive Hypermedia 2006 conference in Dublin:

Rosta Farzan, University of Pittsburgh for the paper "Social navigation support in a course recommendation system"

and

Jiyong Zhang, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne for the paper "A Comparative Study of Compound Critique Generation in Conversational Recommender Systems"

Next year two 2007 James Chen Best Student Paper Awards will be awarded for two best student papers presented at User Modeling 2007 in Corfu, Greece.

All accepted full papers where a PhD student is the first and primary author will be considered for these awards. Each award carries a cash prize of US $1000. You can find more about this award at www.um.org.
