FILTERIX A family-tuned Web filtering service

Description

Filterix internal project developed technology for the classification of web content. Filterix is a content-analysis filtering Web proxy , for the intelligent blocking of obscene content accessible through browsers on the World Wide Web.

Filterix combines cutting-edge technologies, such as machine learning, language engineering and image processing, so as to achieve real-time analysis and subsequent blocking of pornographic content on the Internet. In the current implementation the analysis process is based on real-time filtering on the content of the URL requested by the client browser. The type of information, fused under a probabilistic framework, draws from the text, images and metadata of each page so as to reach an overall probability that the page is pornographic or not. If it is identified as such, the page is blocked and a relevant explanatory message is returned to the user.

Users may choose to set Filterix as their proxy server from their standard web browsers or their administrator may direct all Web traffic through a transparent proxy. The current tested implementations include:

• Filterix for Linux as a Squid extension (all flavours that support Squid 2.4+)
• Filterix for Solaris as a Squid extension (Solaris 8, Squid 2.4+)
• Filterix for WINDOWS (Drag-and-drop add-on to MS ISA proxy server)

The results of this internal project led recently to the foundation of the spin-off company i-sieve (http://www.i-sieve.com/).
